Team Logistics - Registration, Kits, etc.

Updated for the 2009/2010 Smart Move season!

There are two registrations you'll need to know about. The first is just to register your team with FIRST. They're the ones who got this whole thing started. There is no specific deadline for this, but you will need to do this first so you can order recommended materials

Later, you'll want to register for the Stamford Robotics JFLL Expo. That will be your registration to attend our event right here in Stamford. We'll announced that registration date soon. The Stamford Robotics JFLL Expo will be February 7th this year.

Here is a sequence of events

  1. Get interest/form teams
  2. Register on FIRST (on FIRST LEGO League Website)
  3. Purchase JFLL Lego kits (new teams only)
  4. Start your meetings - work towards Climate Connections goals
  5. Register for JFLL Expo in Stamford
  6. Attend JFLL Expo with your team

How to Register your JFLL Team

  1. Go to usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/jfll
  2. Click "Registration" in the links on the left of the page, then click "USA and Canada" link, and finally the "Registration for the 2009 Smart Move Season is open" link
  3. You'll next be asked to log in to your FIRST account or create a new one. For those who registered a team last year, you may use your last year registration information (if you remember it)
  4. After creating a FIRST account, log in to your new first account
  5. You will see a temporary team number with a button to "Edit/View"
  6. Click that "Edit/View" and carefully follow the instructions. Basically they want you to provide information about your team as best as you can before they allow you to pay and complete the registration.
  7. Follow the instructions to purchase your team pass/registration. The cost is $25 and you can use the typical credit card options (or paypal).
  8. After you are done registering your team (and come back to the JFLL site!), you will eventually get a link to the "JFLL Challenge and Materials" page which has the information you need regarding the SMART Moves challenge - Bookmark This Page!

How to purchase your kits (new teams only)

Once you've completed the above steps to register your team, purchasing materials is easy. Simply log in to your FIRST account, click "Edit/View" next to your team name/number, and look for the "Order Materials" section - you'll see a button to "Order"

You do not need to buy everything on this page. Stamford Robotics recommends that you buy the Jr. FLL Base Kit and 15 x 15 base plate. Note however that it is not required for you to buy LEGO through this order page. There is a discount for the Jr. FLL Base Kit by buying it here, but if you can get a similar set of LEGO parts (perhaps through donations) then you are free to do that. If you get LEGO from another source, make sure it has a good collections of gears and other "mechanical/technic" style parts so kids can make simple machines

Where do we find the details of the challenge?

Again, once you've completed the above steps to register your team this is easy. Simply log in to your FIRST account, click "Edit/View" next to your team name/number. On this page look for the "Challenge Materials" section and click the "View" button. There you will have access to the Challenge, a coaches guide, coaches resources, a coloring page, and poster.
